How To Back Up Files to an iPod

The answer to this question is:
To transfer music files on an iPod, using iTunes. You will not be able to see copies of iTunes songs on your iPod in the Finder or My Computer / Computers. If you copy music files to the iPod via the Finder or Windows Explorer, the iPod will not be able to play them. ITunes is the vehicle that must be used to move files.

Connect the iPod to your computer as you normally do. Open iTunes if it does not start automatically. Select the iPod icon in the "Source" component. Then, click on the Source.

Select "Enable disk use" or "manually manage songs and playlists" for most iPod models except iPod shuffle. Either selection will allow you to use the iPod as a disk. If you select "Manually manage songs and playlists, iTunes will not automatically update the iPod with iTunes library. If you want to update automatically iTunes for iPod, be sure to select the "enable disk use".

Click on "Enable disk use" if you use an iPod shuffle. Adjust the slider Storage Allocation to select the amount you want to be used by audio files, and how much you want to use for data files.

Find the iPod disk icon on the desktop and in Finder windows, and in My Computer / Computers running Windows. Double-click the icon and drag files to or from the window of the iPod. This will copy the files over.

Eject iPod before disconnecting the computer.
